The summer, autumn and winter courses in linguistics were conducted to train interested scholars with financial help from the Rockefeller Foundation, USA and thereafter, with grants from University Grants Commission, India.
On the request of the UGC, senior scholars in the department prepared a report on the need for education in Linguistics and gave many suggestions for the same. This led to the opening of departments of Linguistics in many Indian universities.
The department was the first in India to have established a Phonetics laboratory and a language laboratory. Articulatory and acoustic properties of sounds in the Indian languages were studied.
